March 1887.
The Northern Branch State Normal School of California is established under a legislative act. The city of Chico is chosen shortly thereafter as the school’s location. -
June 1887.
8 acres of land are donated for CSU from a cherry orchard belonging to General Bidwell. -
July 1888.
Construction begins on what will become Chico State’s first building. -
September 1889.
Total of 90 enrolled students are enrolled at the future CSU. -
January 1890.
The Chico State library opens with 350 books on the shelves. -
June 1891.
Chico State University’s first class is graduated, the class has 15 students. -
In 1935.
the college is renamed from Chico State Teachers College to Chico State College by a legislative act. [Top]
CSU Chico Athletics.
California State University at Chico competes in Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and has captured championships and national titles in its illustrious history of competing in varsity sports like soccer, baseball, basketball, swimming, volleyball and rugby. The Chico State baseball team has twice captured the NCAA Division II World Series, both in 1997 and 1999. California State University athletes were the men's swimming and diving champions of the NCAA Division II throughout the seventies in 1973, 1974 and 1976.
